Hey It's Valentine's Day, and I Didn't Get Arrested!

Happy Valentine's Day to all the lovers out there. No matter whether your married, boo'ed up, or supa-fly and single...Happy Valentine's / Single's Awareness Day!!! Make sure to surround yourself with love, wherever you may find it!

The longer I am married the more I realize that nothing is that serious, time-sensitive or high-pressured anymore when it comes to holidays, especially Valentine's Day. Hubby and I are perfectly happy waiting for the weekend to go to dinner or on any other type of date because we realize that (1) the price mark-up and crowds will no longer be a problem and (2) it will be more convenient for our baby sitter. And let's face it, we are all just overall better people and easier to be around on the weekends. But Guess what? If the weekend comes and goes and we still don't get to it, there will be another Valentine's Day next year.

MY FAVORITE ROMANCE MOVIES: Love Jones, Lady & The Tramp, (and the new favorite) Wall-E, Titanic & Love Actually

MY FAVORITE ROMANCE STORIES: Memoirs of A Geisha, The Notebook, Romeo & Juliet

ALL TIME FAVORITE COUPLES: Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis, Barak and Michelle Obama and Cliff and Claire Huxtable (I know they are not real but It's my blog and I can put them if I want)

This year, so far, we opted to stay in. Nunu and I made Hubby a heart shaped cake. Hubby brought home dinner from one of our fav restaurants and we ate at the dining room table together as a family. Then, we all danced in the living room to Black Eyed Peas, until someone had a tantrum because she ran out of Nerds candies.

I know this is sort of a boring post given my unexciting romance life, but at least I didn't get arrested for being naked and bound in the back of a Subaru. However, I will end the night tied to something and enjoying it in the comforts of my own bedroom, and that friends would be what we call, "Grown Folks Business" and the content for another type of blog entirely. Have a great night and Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Fourth of July!

First, a thank you to our founding fathers for declaring our Independence and creating a country where we can openly change and develop our government.

"Fourth of July", "The Fourth" and "Independence Day" are all names claimed for today. In my duty of education, here are a few points about the history of today.
  • July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941.
  • The tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83).
  • In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain.
  • On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
 What I love about today:

Barbecue, Yummy apple pie, Family and color scheme.

What I hate about today:

Fireworks.

I hate fireworks. They are loud, annoying and scary. They cause fires. Upset children and dogs. Maintain an influx of burn victims and cost enormous amounts of money. So my question was why do we need them? When did this start? I didn't have to look long to find out that fireworks have been a part of the tradition of Fourth of July since the first anniversary of the Fourth of July. Instead, at the time it was cannons and fire squads.

I have included a video below for the history of fourth of July:

Project Quary Family Home: Backyard Boogie - Week One

This border area in the yard, Hubby started on Sunday.

Will look like this...We hope.
The Family Quary has decided to remodel our backyard!

After 2 years of living here in our inherited 1929 Californian bungalow home, we have finally decided to do something about the boring lawn stretching from our backdoor to the back wall. At least 2000 sqft of lawn. Yes, we have our work cut out for us.

We currently have a swing set/playground out there and an orange tree. Yup, that's it. We would like to add plants, water features, veggie garden and a patio and barbecue pit. Hubby says he needs a deadline in order to commit to this project so it is currently set for July 23rd.

So piece by piece we will get it done. I got so excited by the small border that he dug up that I ran out to Home Goods and purchased a gardening tool belt, tools, a hose, watering can and other miscellaneous items. I can't wait to have this garden as a serene place to pour all my anxious energy into. This will be the perfect place to work on my personal statements and in the future, my law school papers. It will be fun for Nunu to help plant. It will also give Hubby something else to whine about doing but secretly love. I can't wait. This will definitely be my favorite of the home projects.

Birthday Time! One for My Baby, Two more for the Road

Today was Nu-Nu baby's birthday, her 2nd birthday. I told myself that we would keep is small this year. Last year for her 1st birthday we had a large party with lots of people, food, bounce house, games and music. You know the whole enchilada. But not this time. We were thinking we may make a big deal for the milestone birthdays; 5, 10, 16, 18... It's just too much stress and money having the big party every single year.

This year she will have pizza party at her school with her friends. She will also have story time and puppet show at the historic Los Angeles Central Public Library with family. Every Saturday the downtown L.A. grand library has this, it's free and fabulous!

I think that may be enough. I know all this and I have decided all this for a few months now, so why do I still feel guilty. I get angry with my inner guilt bug because I don't know what else I can tell myself.

I think it's a non stop internal struggle, but that's parenthood for you.

Skip to the after show:

The puppet show was incredible. We ended up getting a private room at Panda Express (yes, they have a private room) which is Jolie's favorite, and chowed down on Chinese junk food and cupcakes. The kids got hyped up on sugar and ran a muck it was great!

Nunu enjoyed the day minus a few toddler meltdowns but what do you expect with 2-5 year olds listening to books being read for 2 hours?

"He's Gone Mommy" The Day My Ambition Began

Today I thought of the day my ambition began. I wanted to remember the exact time I decided to start killing myself pushing for constant improvement of myself. No one criticizes me like I criticize me. I am never satisfied with my current situation and I am always looking to strive for more. I had my annual review today at work, it was all high scores and encouraging comments. To the normal person, they would have happily went back to their desk without a second thought.  No no not me. The upward mobility and compensation I was hoping for didn't come together. I work hard, and when I say I work hard, I mean I work hard. I study and I look for improvement in anyway I can. And I am always up for a fight when someone stands in my way. But why is that? Why am I never satisfied with what I have, if even for a moment's time? I think it may be because I am so scared to go back to where I came from. It may also be that I have something to prove to other little girls like me...

The day my father left my mother and I seems like a dream. One luminous afternoon, the kind of late spring afternoons when the sun lazily hangs on your shoulders, and you can play an extra hour outside after your homework is done, it happened. At that time, we lived in a light gray Spanish Colonial style used-to-be-home now apartment building in the back lower level apartment nearest the trash bins. The frequent visitation from a friendly mouse or insect was not far fetched. It was quite the place. My mother and father gave up the privacy of a bedroom for me, while they slept uncomfortably on a pull out couch in the cramped living room. This was the life we were living.

My mother, weary from the day's work and beating sun, opened the heavy iron door. The essence of emptiness smacked us in the face while the vision of tossed belongings sank in our conscience. A hurried trail of clothes led from the closet to the door. My mother ran to the front room closet and flung open the door. She looked right then left then sighed. As I stared at the back of her head, a 9 year old girl with pig tails and overalls, I waited for my next instruction and a straw of understanding.

The magnitude of this occurrence had yet to present itself in my psyche. I moved to put down my backpack under the side table, as I always did, my mind subconsciously grasping for normality. I noticed my father's keys on the table. I picked them up. The rise of my arm from the table to my eye line allowed my brain to catch up and my mother to rest her head on the closet wall. I shook the keys just enough to make a sound and whispered, "He's gone, Mommy."

My mother wailed. This deep moan was heard once before my my ears not more than one year before. That time her loss was her father. Now it was mine. She crossed the room with cement on her feet and hugged me. We sat on the couch, the same as her marital bed and hugged. She said to me, "Jaz'min, Don't you ever depend on a man for anything. Don't you ever let your existence in this world, depend on a man." My memory ends there. This was the day that set the tone for the rest of my life.

To be continued...
